The Danner Shoe Manufacturing Company first opened its doors in 1932 in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin, with a mission to build not just another boot, but a boot that would satisfy an expert. Starting with work boots, then boots for the logging industry, Danner has always sought ways to make a better boot. From their beginnings as manufacturers of work boots, Danner has hand crafted boots for the military, law enforcement, hunting and outdoor recreation.

In the 1960’s and 70’s, as Americans began taking to the outdoors in unprecedented numbers, the popularity of hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing began to soar. Danner’s response to this new market was the Mountain Trail Boot, which has been recognised by Backpacker Magazine as possibly being the most ideal hiking boot made. The Mountain Trail Boot contained all of the characteristics of every Danner hiking boot that would follow. It was lightweight and comfortable, yet very sturdy and flexible, requiring only a short break-in time. This tradition is carried on today in the 453 GTX hiking boot, rated a ‘Best Buy’ by Backpacker magazine.

By 1979, Danner had developed and patented a completely waterproof boot, using an innovative new fabric: Gore-Tex. Never satisfied with past successes, and always striving to improve comfort and performance, by 1992 – Danner’s innovative Airthotics arch support is awarded the APMA seal of acceptance by the American Podiatric Medical Association. The Airthotic support is a half length ventilated insole that circulates air for rapid moisture removal (no more sweaty socks) keeping your feet cool and dry. The half length design also allows the insert to rise and support your arch with every step. Molded from polyurethane, the insole will not compress like cheaper foam inserts, providing longer support.

Recrafting is the lingo that Danner’s craftsmen use to provide everything from simple part replacement and leather care to major overhauls of your hiking boots. Most boots can be recrafted by replacing the outsole, reworking the leather and restitching the seams, converting your battered boots back to their ‘as new’ look and feel.

The more you wear your Danner hiking boots, the better they feel on your feet. After repeated ues, the leather has been so flexed and contoured that it feels like a second skin. This also explains why so many of us have a hard time discarding our old boots, and purrchasing a new pair, because they fit like a glove. Thanks to Danner’s Recrafting program, you can turn back the clock on your favorite  pair of Radical, Ascend, Expedition, Instigator or GTX hiking boots and turn them into a new pair of already broken in boots.
